How to make a diagram with AI
- Pick a diagram type. Flowchart is the default. Choose sequence for messages between people or systems, org chart for reporting lines, timeline for dates and phases, or mind map for ideas around one topic.
- Describe it or paste text. A sentence such as "how a job application moves from applied to hired" is enough. Meeting notes, a procedure document or a lesson plan work even better, because the AI then uses your exact steps and names.
- Generate. The diagram appears in a few seconds. Each label is kept short so the drawing stays readable.
- Fix anything by hand. The Mermaid code under the drawing is the diagram. Rename a box, add a branch or delete a step and it redraws as you type.
- Export or present. Download a PNG for documents and slides, an SVG for print and design tools, copy the code for Notion or GitHub, or press Turn this into slides.
Five diagram types, and when to use each
| Type | Best for | Try typing |
|---|---|---|
| Flowchart | Processes with steps and decisions | How a support ticket is escalated |
| Sequence diagram | Who sends what to whom, in order | Paying for an online order by card |
| Org chart | Teams, roles and reporting lines | A school with a principal, two deputies and four departments |
| Timeline | Dates, eras and project phases | Key events of the French Revolution |
| Mind map | Brainstorming and revision notes | Causes of climate change |
An AI flowchart generator that keeps decisions readable
A good flowchart has one start, clear ends, and a labelled path out of every decision. The generator asks the AI for exactly that structure and then checks it before anything is drawn: every arrow must point at a real step, and every decision gets labelled branches such as Yes and No. If the answer does not pass that check, it asks once more, and if it still fails you get a clear message instead of a broken picture.
Flowcharts default to top-to-bottom, which suits phones and documents. For a wide, left-to-right layout, change flowchart TD to flowchart LR in the code box.
Who uses a diagram maker like this
Students
Turn a chapter into a timeline before an exam, map the steps of a lab method, or paste lecture notes and get a flowchart of the argument. Drawing the structure is a fast way to find the part you do not understand yet.
Teachers
Make a process diagram for a worksheet, a timeline for a history unit or an org chart of a government in a minute, then download the PNG straight into a handout or slide. Students can edit the code themselves to practise sequencing.
Teams and freelancers
Document an approval flow, sketch how a login or checkout works between services, or show who reports to whom after a reorganisation. Paste the Mermaid code into a wiki or pull request so the diagram lives next to the text and stays easy to update.
Tips for better diagrams
- Name the actors. "The customer emails support, support checks the order system" gives a clearer sequence diagram than "an email is sent".
- Say where it starts and ends. A process with a clear trigger and outcome makes a tidier flowchart.
- Keep one diagram to one idea. If the result has more than about 20 boxes, split the text and make two.
- Paste real text for anything about your own organisation. The AI only invents structure when you give it a bare topic.
From diagram to presentation
Diagrams often end up in a slide deck. Turn this into slides hands the outline of your diagram to the SlideMaker deck builder, so the steps, branches or dates become the skeleton of a presentation that you can then theme and edit. Building the deck needs a free account; the diagram itself never does.
Frequently asked questions
Is this AI diagram generator free?
Yes. SlideMaker is a free, non-commercial project. You can make up to 10 diagrams a day without an account, and 30 a day with a free account. Editing, PNG and SVG downloads and copying the code are unlimited.
What kinds of diagrams can it make?
Flowcharts, sequence diagrams, org charts, timelines and mind maps. Pick the type above the text box before you generate. For a mind map with an outline editor, use the AI mind map generator.
Can I edit the diagram after the AI draws it?
Yes. Every diagram is plain Mermaid code, shown under the drawing. Change a label, add a step or delete a line and the diagram redraws as you type. If an edit has a mistake, the last valid drawing stays on screen until you fix it.
Can I use the diagram in Notion, GitHub or Google Docs?
Copy the Mermaid code into any tool that renders Mermaid, such as Notion code blocks, GitHub Markdown, GitLab or Obsidian. For Google Docs, Word or a slide deck, download the PNG. The SVG stays sharp at any size and opens in Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape.
How long can my text be?
Up to 5,000 characters, which is about 800 words. A one-line topic works too: the AI fills in a sensible structure from general knowledge. For anything factual about your own team or product, paste the real text so the diagram only uses what you wrote.
Is my text stored?
Your text is sent to the AI model to draw the diagram and is not saved to a SlideMaker account or shown to anyone else. Do not paste passwords or private personal data.
Can I turn a diagram into a presentation?
Yes. Turn this into slides sends the diagram outline to the SlideMaker deck builder as the topic, so each branch or step becomes material for a slide. Making a deck needs a free account.
